Hamilton Mountain Trail Among Top All-Around Hikes Near Portland

It was late winter when I first discovered why the Hamilton Mountain Trail ranks among the best hikes near Portland. One of those magical Pacific Northwest mornings when the seasonal drizzle breaks and shocking cerulean blue replaces the gray sky—the kind of day that fills you with an insatiable need to be outside.

I opened my eyes, squinted at unexpected brightness streaming through the window blinds, and immediately knew what we had to do.

“Let’s do the Hamilton Mountain hike today,” I told Bryan.

That spontaneous decision led us to one of the most spectacular all-around hikes near Portland—a trail that perfectly combines stunning Columbia River Gorge views, multiple waterfalls, and diverse ecosystems all within an hour’s drive of the city.

Why Hamilton Mountain Trail is Special

The Hamilton Mountain Trail stands out among Columbia River Gorge hikes because it offers the best of both worlds. Bryan often jokes that view hikes tend to be windy with sunburn potential, while he prefers cool, mossy canyon hikes with waterfalls. Hamilton Mountain delivers both experiences without compromise—it’s renowned as a spectacular view hike, but even without the vistas, it would rank as an outstanding waterfall hike.

    Hamilton Mountain Trail Quick Stats

    • Distance: 6.4 miles out-and-back (8.1 miles loop option)
    • Elevation Gain: 2,100 feet
    • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
    • Time: 4-6 hours
    • Best Season: March through October

Hamilton Mountain Waterfalls: The Trail’s Hidden Gems

Pool of the Winds: A Lord of the Rings Experience

The most intriguing waterfall on the Hamilton Mountain Trail is the Pool of the Winds—a name that sounds straight out of fantasy literature. Here, the river plunges into a pool surrounded by towering cliffs, creating a dramatic spectacle mostly hidden from view.

A narrow chasm in the rocks reveals just a slice of the waterfall, but waterfall mist blasts through this opening on perpetual, self-generated winds. When lighting conditions align perfectly, double rainbows form in the Pool of the Winds mist—one of the most magical sights in the Columbia River Gorge.

    Rodney Falls and Hardy Falls

The Hamilton Mountain Trail features three waterfalls occurring within the first 1.5 miles:

Rodney Falls: The main trail crosses directly below this cascading waterfall on a footbridge, creating the sensation of hiking through the middle of the falls themselves.

Hardy Falls: While less dramatic due to viewing angle and distance, the side trail to Hardy Falls offers beautiful creek views with a series of low cascades tumbling over moss-covered rocks.

Pro Tip: If time is limited, prioritize the Pool of the Winds—it’s the most spectacular of the three waterfalls.

Hamilton Mountain Views and High Meadows

After passing the waterfalls, the Hamilton Mountain Trail transforms dramatically. Steep switchbacks carry hikers upward through dense forest before opening onto incredible Columbia River Gorge views from high meadows dotted with craggy rock formations.

    Wildflower Season on Hamilton Mountain

These elevated meadows come alive with wildflowers from March through early summer. During our first March hike, tiny yellow wildflowers were just beginning to open. As spring progresses, the meadows fill with increasingly diverse blooms.

Wildflower Timing: Check the Northwest Wildflowers bloom map for current wildflower status throughout Washington and Oregon.

    Beacon Rock Views from Above

The high meadows offer a unique bird’s-eye view of Beacon Rock from above—a perspective unavailable from any other easily accessible trail. This elevated viewpoint provides perfect spots for rest breaks while soaking in epic Columbia River Gorge panoramas.

Hamilton Mountain Trailhead Location and Access

    Getting to Hamilton Mountain Trail

The Hamilton Mountain Trailhead is located on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge, approximately 45 minutes east of Portland and Vancouver. This location places it perfectly for day trips from either Oregon or Washington.

Address: Beacon Rock State Park, WA-14, Skamania, WA 98648 GPS Coordinates: 45.6281° N, 122.0225° W

    Hamilton Mountain Trail Parking Challenges

Weekend parking at Hamilton Mountain Trail can be extremely challenging. During our March visit, all parking spots were filled by 10 AM on Saturday, with rangers directing overflow traffic to turn back.

    Parking Solutions:

    • Weekday visits: Significantly easier parking availability
    • Early weekend arrival: Before 8 AM for best chances
    • Beacon Rock alternative: Park at nearby Beacon Rock and walk up the road (use caution)
    • Combination hikes: Complete Beacon Rock first, then check Hamilton Mountain parking

Required Passes: Washington State Discover Pass or daily parking fee required.

    Hamilton Mountain Trail Route Options

    Standard Out-and-Back Route

    • Distance: 6.4 miles
    • Best for: First-time visitors and moderate hikers
    • Highlights: All three waterfalls plus summit views

    Lollipop Loop Option

    • Distance: 8.1 miles
    • Best for: Experienced hikers seeking variety
    • Advantage: Different perspectives on descent

AllTrails Recommendation: Check current trail conditions and detailed maps on AllTrails before your visit.

Hamilton Mountain Trail Difficulty and Safety

    Fitness Requirements

The Hamilton Mountain Trail is steep and challenging, providing a genuine workout for hikers of all fitness levels. The significant elevation gain over relatively short distance makes this a demanding hike.

    Not Recommended For:

    • Hikers with knee problems (steep ascent and descent)
    • Beginners seeking easy introduction to hiking
    • Those unprepared for sustained uphill climbing

    Alternative Option: Waterfall-Only Hike

The first 3 miles to all three waterfalls offer a much more gradual, accessible hiking experience perfect for those seeking beautiful destinations without the challenging summit climb.

Best Time to Hike Hamilton Mountain Trail

    Seasonal Considerations

    Spring (March-May):

    • Pros: Wildflowers, higher waterfall flow, comfortable temperatures
    • Cons: Potentially muddy conditions, variable weather

    Summer (June-August):

    • Pros: Dry trails, clear views, warm weather
    • Cons: Lower waterfall flow, more crowded, hot conditions in meadows

    Fall (September-October):

    • Pros: Autumn colors, comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds
    • Cons: Shorter days, potential early weather changes

Winter: Not recommended due to snow and ice conditions at higher elevations.

What to Bring for Hamilton Mountain Trail

    Essential Gear

    • Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support
    • Plenty of water (3+ liters recommended)
    • Energy snacks and lunch for summit break
    • Layers for changing conditions between forest and exposed meadows
    • Rain gear (this is the Pacific Northwest!)
    • Camera for waterfall and view photography

    Safety Considerations

    • Start early to ensure adequate daylight
    • Check weather conditions before departing
    • Inform others of your hiking plans
    • Carry first aid basics for remote trail sections

Why Hamilton Mountain Trail Ranks Among Portland’s Best

The Hamilton Mountain Trail earns its reputation as one of the top all-around hikes near Portland by delivering exceptional diversity within a single trail experience. Few hikes combine spectacular waterfalls, challenging elevation gain, and panoramic views so seamlessly.

This trail survived the devastating 2017 Eagle Creek Fire that closed many popular Columbia River Gorge hikes, making it even more valuable for Portland-area hikers seeking that perfect combination of waterfalls and views.

Whether you’re drawn by the mystical Pool of the Winds, the challenging climb to spectacular vistas, or the rare opportunity to see Beacon Rock from above, Hamilton Mountain Trail delivers an unforgettable Pacific Northwest hiking experience.

    Planning Your Hamilton Mountain Adventure

The Hamilton Mountain Trail represents everything that makes Pacific Northwest hiking special—dramatic waterfalls, challenging climbs, and rewarding views that make every uphill step worthwhile. Just like that spontaneous late-winter morning when unexpected sunshine called us to adventure, this trail offers the perfect escape when you need to answer the call of the mountains.
