It was the middle of January when Bryan and I discovered the magic of Drift Creek Falls. We were driving back to Portland from a successful glass float hunt in Lincoln City, carefully cradling our precious find as we navigated the serpentine road toward this hidden Oregon gem. The misty winter day created perfect conditions for exploring what would become one of our favorite waterfall hikes near Lincoln City.

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll share everything you need to know about hiking to Drift Creek Falls, from trail details to that incredible suspension bridge that makes this waterfall truly unforgettable.

What Makes Drift Creek Falls Special?

Oregon boasts over 1,600 waterfalls according to the Northwest Waterfall Survey, but Drift Creek Falls stands apart from the crowd. What makes this 75-foot waterfall unique isn’t just its dramatic plunge into the canyon below—it’s the spectacular 240-foot suspension bridge that spans the cliffs directly beside the falls.

This engineering marvel offers hikers an unparalleled perspective of the waterfall, allowing you to witness Drift Creek Falls from both above and below during a single hike. Few waterfalls in Oregon provide such an immersive, multi-angle viewing experience.

The Famous Drift Creek Falls Suspension Bridge

The Drift Creek Falls suspension bridge is an attraction in itself. Standing 100 feet above the creek and stretching 240 feet across the canyon, this impressive structure was completed in 1997 through an extraordinary effort that required helicopter delivery of materials to the remote location.

The bridge carries a poignant story—it’s dedicated to Scott Paul, the original bridge engineer who tragically died in a construction accident during the early phases of the project. After his death, the project was paused for several years before being completed as a memorial to his vision.

Walking across this suspension bridge feels like stepping into an adventure movie, with the waterfall thundering beside you and the forest canopy stretching endlessly in all directions.

Drift Creek Falls Trailhead Location and Access

Drift Creek Falls is located in the Siuslaw National Forest, approximately 40 minutes east of Lincoln City and 2 hours from Portland. The drive to the trailhead follows a narrow, winding forest road that’s not recommended for those prone to motion sickness.

Getting to Drift Creek Falls Trailhead

Address: Forest Road 17, approximately 10 miles east of Lincoln City GPS Coordinates: 44.9167° N, 123.8833° W Drive Time: 40 minutes from Lincoln City, 2 hours from Portland

Important: Secure all loose items in your vehicle—the curvy road has numerous sharp bends that can send water bottles (and precious glass floats!) rolling around your car.

    Parking and Permits Required

A recreation pass is required to park at the Drift Creek Falls trailhead. Accepted passes include:

    • America the Beautiful Annual Pass
    • Northwest Forest Pass
    • Daily recreation pass (must be purchased online in advance)

Critical Note: You cannot purchase day passes on-site. Plan ahead and buy your pass online to avoid disappointment after the long drive to the trailhead.

Drift Creek Falls Trail Details and Difficulty

    Trail Length and Type

    • Distance: 3.2 miles round-trip
    • Trail Type: Out-and-back
    • Elevation Change: Approximately 340 feet
    • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

What to Expect on the Drift Creek Falls Hike

The trail begins with a gentle downhill journey through a recovering forest ecosystem. Evidence of past logging is visible, but nature has reclaimed the area with spectacular results. The most striking feature of this hike isn’t the destination—it’s the journey through Oregon’s legendary moss-draped forest.

Moss Paradise: Every surface seems covered in vibrant green moss. Puffy cushions top old cedar stumps, stubby moss clings to tree bark, and stringy moss hangs like natural holiday decorations from countless branches. This creates a fairy-tale atmosphere that’s particularly magical on misty days.

    Trail Conditions and Obstacles

Winter storms occasionally deposit fallen trees across the trail, creating minor obstacles that require scrambling over or around downed logs. Before your visit, check recent trip reports on AllTrails for current trail conditions, especially during storm season (October through March).

The return journey is entirely uphill, providing an excellent workout after your leisurely descent to the falls. This reverse difficulty pattern allows you to enjoy the scenery on the way down and get your cardio on the way back up.
