The first winter, half our dahlia tubers died. Dahlias had always fascinated me, with their vibrant flowers ranging from tiny blooms to enormous specimens the size of soccer balls. When Bryan and I first had our own garden, we decided to grow these bizarre and beautiful blooms. Like most things, that turned out to be more difficult than expected.

Thankfully, the largest dahlia farm in the country sits just 35 minutes from Portland. Every August and September, Swan Island Dahlias opens their spectacular dahlia fields Oregon to the public for a free festival of flowers, complete with dahlia-growing classes that could have saved me from that first-year tuber disaster.

Why Swan Island Dahlia Festival is Oregon’s Premier Flower Experience

Swan Island Dahlia Festival transforms Canby, Oregon into the Pacific Northwest’s flower tourism capital. This isn’t just about pretty blooms – it’s about experiencing the largest dahlia operation in America, where visitors can learn from experts who’ve perfected the art of growing these challenging yet rewarding flowers.

    What Makes Swan Island Special

We bought our original dahlia tubers from Swan Island Dahlias, so visiting the Oregon dahlia festival feels like returning to the dahlia Mother Ship. Walking among rows and rows of luminous, delightfully unique blooms creates an aura of beauty and inspiration that I try to carry back to our home garden.

The diversity overwhelms visitors in the best possible way. From tiny pom-pom varieties to dinner-plate dahlias larger than your head, every color combination and flower form imaginable spreads across these Oregon flower fields.

Swan Island Dahlia Festival: Essential Planning Information

    Festival Details and Timing

Location: Swan Island Dahlias, Canby, Oregon (35 minutes from Portland) Season: August through September annually Schedule: Closed Mondays and Tuesdays Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM Cost: Completely free admission

What to Expect During Your Visit

Weekend Highlights: Live music and special events Food Options: On-site food carts offering tasty lunch options Family Activities: Picnic areas adjacent to flower fields Shopping: Cut flowers and tuber ordering for home gardens Education: Classes ranging from art workshops to successful dahlia growing

The Canby dahlia festival creates perfect conditions for flower photography, family outings, and learning from dahlia experts who’ve spent decades perfecting their craft.

Learning from the Dahlia Experts: Why Growing Dahlias is Challenging

Visiting Swan Island dahlia fields provides crucial education for home gardeners struggling with these temperamental beauties. My own dahlia journey illustrates why expert guidance matters.

The Slug Battle: Year One Challenges

When we first planted dahlia tubers, every slug in the neighborhood descended on the young shoots, possibly before they even broke soil surface. Many slug pellets later, we managed to grow several plants to maturity. Our little clump of flowering dahlias felt like a great victory.

Then winter arrived with its storage challenges.

    Winter Storage: The Make-or-Break Moment

The internet advised digging up tubers for winter, packing them with damp coconut coir or peat moss to prevent shriveling. The moisture level proved critical – too damp and tubers rot, too dry and they shrivel.

Storage temperature mattered equally: cold enough to remain dormant, but not freezing. Labeling became essential once all tubers went into storage boxes together.

    Learning from Failure

That first year, I diligently dug up tubers, rinsed and labeled them, packed them in the basement, and spritzed them slightly. Spring revealed my over-correction – most formerly plump tubers were now sunken and shriveled. I’d avoided rotting but hadn’t kept them damp enough.

    Finding Success: Pacific Northwest Solutions

The second year, I discovered an alternative approach better suited to our mild Pacific Northwest climate. Instead of digging tubers, cover the planting area with plastic (preventing excess water in our rainy region) and mulch heavily (preventing freezing).

This Oregon dahlia growing method proved much more successful. Instead of losing half our tubers, we lost only one in year two. Progress!

    Oregon’s Flower Tourism Beyond Dahlias

Oregon flower fields extend far beyond dahlias, creating year-round flower tourism opportunities throughout the state.

    Spring Flower Destinations

Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm: Extensive colorful tulip fields with annual festivals featuring food trucks and antique tractor displays. Early spring blooms coincide with alternately sunny and rainy conditions, sometimes creating muddy but beloved festival experiences.

Cherry Blossoms: March brings peak cherry blossoms to Portland, with Reed College and downtown waterfront offering the best viewing. Free parking at Reed makes it particularly accessible.

    Summer Flower Experiences

Schreiner’s Iris Gardens: Near Salem, featuring curated iris displays plus lupines and enormous columbine flowers. Seating throughout gardens creates perfect picnic and reading spots.

West Union Gardens: Hillsboro’s stunning sunflower fields peak in late summer. Shorter bloom windows require monitoring website updates, but huge flowers during peak summer create ideal photography conditions. Sunflower heads face east, making sunset photography particularly spectacular.

Hood River Lavender Farms: Peaceful lavender fields with striking Mount Adams views. Mount Hood appears so enormous from the access road that the world seems magnified.

    Year-Round Options

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden: Southeast Portland’s extensive rhododendron and azalea collection in lush lakeside settings. May peak season coincides with duckling season, adding wildlife viewing to flower appreciation.

Planning Your Oregon Flower Tourism Adventure

Best Photography Tips for Dahlia Fields

Morning Light: Soft lighting enhances dahlia colors without harsh shadows Close-up Details: Capture intricate petal formations and color gradations Wide Field Shots: Show the scale and variety of plantings Macro Photography: Reveal dewdrops and tiny details invisible to naked eyes

Combining Dahlia Festival with Other Oregon Attractions

Wine Country: Nearby Willamette Valley wineries State Parks: Silver Falls and other natural attractions Portland Day Trips: Easy return to city attractions Seasonal Combinations: Link with other flower festivals for extended tours

Why Dahlia Fields Matter for Home Gardeners

Visiting Oregon dahlia farms provides invaluable education for home growers. Seeing hundreds of varieties in peak condition, learning storage techniques from experts, and understanding which varieties thrive in Pacific Northwest conditions transforms dahlia growing from frustrating guesswork to informed cultivation.

    Taking Home Success Strategies

    • Variety Selection: Choose types proven successful in Oregon climate
    • Storage Solutions: Learn proper winter preparation techniques
    • Pest Management: Understand slug control and other regional challenges
    • Soil Preparation: Discover optimal growing conditions

Creating Lasting Memories at Swan Island

Standing among rows of luminous dahlias, from tiny button varieties to enormous dinner-plate specimens, creates the kind of inspiration that transforms ordinary gardens into extraordinary spaces. The Swan Island Dahlia Festival offers more than beautiful flowers – it provides education, inspiration, and connection to Oregon’s rich agricultural heritage.

Whether you’re a struggling beginner like I was, an experienced gardener seeking new varieties, or simply someone who appreciates natural beauty, these Oregon dahlia fields deliver unforgettable experiences just minutes from Portland.

Pack your camera, bring a picnic lunch, and prepare to discover why dahlias have captivated gardeners for generations. The Swan Island Dahlia Festival proves that sometimes the best education comes from seeing perfection in action.
